Shockers Split DH with Missouri State

3/21/2007 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State (16-18, 4-1) saw its five-game winning streak snapped as the Shockers split a midweek doubleheader with Missouri State (12-16, 1-4) Wednesday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium. WSU won the first game of the set 5-1 before dropping game two, 4-2.

The Shockers are next in action this weekend in a crucial Missouri Valley Conference series at Creighton, who is currently tied atop the MVC standings with a 3-0 record.

Missouri State 4, Shockers 2

Missouri State started game two the same way they started game one, jumping on the Shockers early with a run in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Katie Martin led the game off by drawing a walk and got to third after stealing second and going to third after an errant throw. She came home on a Michelle Armentrout single to center to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Starter Ashly Bright got out of trouble early, striking out both Martin and pitcher Melissa Porche to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second. Bright (4-7) finished the afternoon with the loss, but gave up just one earned run on seven hits. She walked four and struck out eight on the day.

The Shockers got on the board in the second when Erin Peters came around to score on a Tiffany Dahlquist double down the right line, tying the game, 1-1.

WSU took the lead in the third when Katie McGeeney singled to center and got to second on a Brooke Usher sacrifice. Britnee Barnett then ripped a single up the middle to bring McGeeney home to give the Shockers a 2-1 lead.

Missouri State regained the lead with three runs in the fourth, thanks to timely hits by left-fielder Jodie Shead and Porche, and poor defensive play by the Shockers, putting MSU ahead 4-2 after four.

The Shockers stranded runners in each of the final three innings, but never threatened as Porche (8-9) picked up the win, working the complete game, giving up just two runs while striking out six.

Shockers 5, Missouri State 1
Melissa Porche got the Bears on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch by Shocker starter Margo Pruis (8-8). Porche got on with the game's first hit, a single up the middle, and got to third on a Shocker error before touching home on the errant throw to give MSU a 1-0 lead.

Margo Pruis (9-7) got the win for the Shockers, giving up just three hits and walking none while striking out six on the day. Pruis pitched well in the windy conditions, running her win streak to three-straight decisions, and recording her 700th career strikeout, the first Shocker pitcher to achieve the mark.

The Shockers answered in a big way in the bottom of the frame, with back-to-back solo home runs by Britnee Barnett and Cynthia Verhulst, putting the Shockers ahead 2-1.

WSU got two more in the third when Stephanie De La Riva floated a single to right field that scored Katie McGeeney and Barnett, giving the Shockers a 4-1 advantage. The Shockers tacked on another to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth after Lisa Jones doubled to right-center and came around on a McGeeney single to left.

Porche (7-9), the MSU starter, worked four innings, giving up five runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out one. She turned the ball over to Megan Ramsey in the fifth, who shut the Shockers down over the final two innings, giving up no hits and striking out one.

Neither team managed a baserunner in the final two innings.
