Shocks Finish Series Sweep of Drake

3/18/2007 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State softball team (15-17, 3-0) won its fourth-straight game by capping a conference series sweep over Drake (8-18, 0-3) with a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

Margo Pruis (8-7) got the win for the Shockers, working 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, one of which was a two-run homer by the Bulldogs. Pruis walked just one and struck out six on the day, keeping the Bulldog bats quiet for most of the afternoon. Junior Ashly Bright picked up the save for WSU, her first of the season.

Mandy Osborn (4-9) took the loss for the Bulldogs, after giving up two runs in the fifth that helped clinch the game for the Shockers.

Neither team could get on the board until the fourth, when senior Lisa Jones led the inning off with a double to left and went to third on a well-placed sacrifice by Lindsie Mitts. Jones came home a batter later when Katie McGeeney lofted a ball deep to left to bring the Shocker first baseman home on the sacrifice fly, breaking the scoreless tie by putting the Shockers ahead 1-0 after four.

Drake fought back with a two-run homer by leadoff hitter Elena Leon, giving Drake their second lead of the weekend, 2-1.

The Shockers answered back with a four-spot in the fifth, to push ahead 5-2 heading to the sixth. Cynthia Verhulst led the inning off with a walk before Stephanie De La Riva doubled to left-center to put runners on second and third. Elissa Zeches, pinch-running for Verhulst, came home on a Tiffany Dahlquist single to make it regain the lead, and Jones drove in De La Riva with a sacrifice fly to put the Shockers ahead 4-2. Brooke Usher drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the fifth and final run of the afternoon, securing the win.

Drake stranded two in the sixth, but Bright struck out the side in the seventh for her first save of the season. Bright worked the final two innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four.

The Shockers stranded 12 runners on the afternoon. Britnee Barnett, Stephanie De La Riva and Kara L'Huillier each had multiple-hit games.

WSU is next in action when the Shockers host Missouri State for a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m., Wednesday at Wilkins Stadium.
