WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State (11-16) held Minnesota (9-10) scoreless until a wild pitch allowed a run to score in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Golden Gophers a 1-0 win over the Shockers to complete the second day of action at the 2007 Shocker Invitational at Wilkins Stadium. WSU blitzed Western Illinois, 9-0, in five innings earlier in the day.

Wichita State completes the 2007 Shocker Invitational at 10 a.m., Sunday morning against Nebraska in a game originally scheduled for 12:30 p.m., but moved to accomodate the Huskers' travel plans. Western Illinois and Minnesota wrap up the tournament at 12:30 p.m.

Minnesota 1, Shockers 0
The Shockers outhit the Golden Gophers 4-1, but one hit was more than enough for UM, after pinch-runnner Sila Fernandez scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to give Minnesota the lead and the win.

WSU starter Margo Pruis (5-6) issued a leadoff walk to Lisa Parks before she surrendered running duties to Fernandez. UM catcher Shannon Stemper then looped a single to shallow left before Casey Wheeler advanced the runners to second and third with a well executed sacrifice. Pruis' pitch to Colleen Conway glanced off the tip of catcher Kara L'Huillier's glove all the way to the backstop, and the freshman's toss to Pruis was not in time, as Fernandez slid in safely to give Minnesota the 1-0 lead.

The Shockers left five runners on base, including two in scoring position even though WSU did not get a runner to third base on the night.

Minnesota starter Briana Bassett (5-3) gave up just four hits and struck out seven in the winning effort, keeping the Shockers guessing in clutch situations throughout the night.

Shockers 9, Western Illinois 0 (5 innings)
The Shocker offense picked up right where it left off on Friday, cranking out 10 hits enroute to the 9-0, five-inning win over the Westerwinds.

Three Shockers had multiple hits on the afternoon, including junior Cynthia Verhulst, who had three extra-base hits, one of which was her fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the first that gave the Shockers a 3-0 lead after one. Verhulst finished the game with a game-high three RBI.

Sophomore Tiffany Dahlquist went 2-for-3 at the plate, including the two-run walk-off blast that ended the game in the fifth. Ashly Bright and Lisa Jones drove in the other runs as the Shockers used a five-run fifth to end the game.

Bright (3-6) shined in the circle as well, working the complete-game two-hit shutout, walking just one and striking out four. Kim King (0-3) took the loss for the Westerwinds, giving up seven runs on eight hits while issuing three walks to the Shockers in 4.1 innings.
