FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Wichita State's softball team (6-11) dropped its final two games at the Clarion Inn/Lady'Back Invitational on Sunday. WSU fell Sunday morning to Colorado State, 6-2, before falling to Missouri 10-7 in the championship game.
WSU next travels to Norman, Okla., next weekend to take on nationally-ranked Oklahoma and Temple in the 2007 Residence Inn Tournament hosted by OU.
Missouri 10, Shockers 7
Wichita State (6-11) mounted a late-inning comeback but could not overcome Missouri's offense that posted eight runs in the first three innings, as the Shockers fell to the Tigers (14-6), for a second-straight day in the championship game of the Clarion Inn/Lady'Back Invitational.
The Shockers got the scoring started in the top of the first when Britnee Barnett homered to left field, giving the Shockers a 1-0 lead. Missouri responded with two in the bottom of the frame after a Micaela Minner double to right brought home Leanne Bowers and Amanda Renth to claim a 2-1 lead.
WSU fought back with two more in the second, after Stephanie De La Riva drew a walk and came home on Cynthia Verhulst's second home run of the season, giving the Shockers a 3-2 lead. The one-run deficit was as close as the Shockers would be the rest of the afternoon however, as Missouri exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third off Verhulst (0-1) who worked just two innings, giving up six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.
Ashly Bright and Barnett combined to work the final four innings, with Bright shouldering the other four runs while walking four and striking out two. MU tacked on two more in the fourth before the Shockers mounted a comeback with four runs in the fifth. De La Riva posted a two-RBI double before Erin Peters drove in two with a triple to left field, closing the MU lead to 10-7.
The Shockers stranded two runners in each the sixth and the seventh, but Megan Dennis struck out two in the final two innings to pick up her first save of the season, after Alaina Jacobson (2-1) came on in relief to pick up the win.
Colorado State 6, Shockers 2
Wichita State (6-10) could not overcome a five-run third by Colorado State as the Shockers fell, 6-2, Sunday morning at the Clarion Inn/Lady'Back Invitational.
Each team posted a run in the first, with a RBI single by Ashly Bright providing the offense for the Shockers, tying the score at 1-1. A two-run homer by Jessica Stickland started the Rams off in the third, the first two of five runs off Bright (1-5), who started the game, but surrendered to Margo Pruis, who worked the final five innings, giving up just one run while striking out 10.
The Shockers had just two hits in the final four innings off CSU's Cayte Billman, who picked up the complete-game win, striking out 10 an walking one.
