Men's Basketball Wichita State

Shocks Tame Tigers, 67-47

Box Score The Wichita State men's basketball team used a second half scoring surge and suffocating defense to move to 6-4 on the season with a 67-47 win over LSU (6-4) Wednesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

The win also marked the 200th in head coach Gregg Marshall's career.

The Shockers were led by Phil Thomasson's 15 points, while Ramon Clemente had his second double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. It was also the third time Clemente has had double-digit rebounds this season.

The Tigers were paced by Marcus Thornton's 12 points, while Terry Martin finished with 11 points.

After a Martin three-pointer on LSU's first possession, WSU went on a 12-3 run to take an early 12-6 lead and forced LSU coach John Brady to call timeout. The Tigers came out of the timeout on fire, going on a 7-2 run to take a 15-14 lead with 11:15 to play in the half.

That slim lead would be LSU's last. The Shockers used a full court trap and zone defense to slow down the Tigers and force outside shots. WSU pushed the ball on offense whenever possible and converted fastbreak opportunities into points.

“We don't execute very well, particularly against the zone,” Brady said. “When you can't stabilize a game at all by finishing some quality defensive possessions with a rebound, there's no way you can get any stability within the game.”

The fastbreak highlight of the night came with 5:02 left in the half when Matt Braeuer found P.J. Couisnard running down the floor after a Thomasson block and threw a half court alley-oop that Couisnard emphatically slammed home for a 23-18 lead. Another Couisnard dunk on a put-back gave the Shockers a 27-20 lead at halftime.

WSU began to pour it on in the second half using a 15-4 run out of the break, capped by a Gal Mekel three-pointer, to take a 42-24 lead with 14:16 remaining. Despite being undersized compared to the Tiger frontline, the Shockers pounded the ball inside and crashed the boards to build their lead.

The Shockers put the game out of reach with a 15-2 run for a 59-32 lead with 5:15 to play. During the run, WSU held the Tigers scoreless for five minutes. Wendell Preadom put the finishing touches on the Shocker win with a steal and fastbreak layup with six seconds to go for the 67-47 win.

“We played with a lot of pride and a lot of heart,” Marshall said. “We certainly played as hard as our opposition. We were very tough and it resulted in a much needed win, an exciting win.”

WSU dominated the glass, out-rebounding LSU 50-31, including 17 offensive rebounds. The Shockers also limited turnovers and made smart decisions on the offensive end of the court finishing with 15 assists, led by four from Braeuer.

“Our rebounding tonight was tremendous,” Braeuer said. “We played well enough to win and we will continue to get better. If we play like we did tonight, then we have a chance to be in every game this year.”

The Shockers held LSU to just 31 percent shooting. WSU shot 40 percent for the game and 53 percent in the second half. Every Shocker that played scored at least four points and collected at least one rebound.

WSU is back in action on Sat., Dec. 22 when UAB comes to Charles Koch Arena. The Blazers are 8-4, including wins against Cincinnati and Kentucky, and are led by Robert Vaden's 19.7 points per game. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
