WSU Drops Paradise Jam Opener

11/22/2007 1:00:00 AM

ST. THOMAS, USVI - No. 11/10 Texas A&M (3-0) used a strong inside game and a deep bench to send the Wichita State women's basketball team (1-2) to its second-straight loss as the Aggies dropped the Shockers 70-36 Thursday evening in WSU's first game of the 2007 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.

No Shocker player broke double-digits on the scoring ledger, with Daria Frazier and Marcy Sudbeck leading the way with eight points each. Senior Kiki Stephens scored four points, as did freshman guard Shantel Pointer, as Pointer and Jennifer DeGarmo's three points accounted for the only Wichita State points off the bench, as Texas A&M outscored the Shockers 33-7 in reserve points. The Aggies also held a 28-14 edge on the offensive glass, leading to a 22-7 advantage in second-chance points.

Patrice Reado led the charge for the nationally-ranked Aggies, scoring 14 points in 15 minutes played. La Toya Micheaux scored 13 points as did guard Takia Starks. The Aggies blocked seven Wichita State shots on the night, but only shot 39 percent from the field.

The Shockers traded baskets with the Aggies early on until a Patrice Reado bucket sparked an 11-0 run for Texas A&M, aided by an eight-minute scoring drought by the WSU offense. Marcy Sudbeck's jumper with 7:42 left in the half ended the dry spell and closed the deficit to 18-8, but the Aggies outscored the Shockers 14-6 the remainder of the half including a 9-0 run over the last five minutes of the first to take a 32-14 lead into the break.

Texas A&M opened the second half on a 24-6 run over the first 10 minutes aided by another five-minute scoring drought by the Shockers, and WSU could never recover as the Aggies sent WSU to its second loss of the season. Wichita State returns to action in the Paradise Jam at Noon CST, Friday against Indiana, who lost earlier today to Wake Forest.
