The women's tennis team started out their season this weekend in Tulsa, where they played the St. Louis Billikens. The lady shockers ended the day ahead of the Billikens 6-1.
"I am so proud of our girls for their efforts tonight. This is an excellent way to begin the season," director of tennis Chris Young said, "Last season St. Louis defeated us to open the season rather easily, so this match is an indication of our improvement as a program and hopefully the beginning to a great season"
This is the second year in a row that Wichita State opened the season with St. Louis. This weekend was also the debut tournament for recent additions
Madina Rakhim and
Anna Egorova.
"It was nice to see Madina come out and win a tough first match," Young said. "She is a special player who is going to have a lot of success this season and her win tonight is an indication of that."
The three seniors, Wendi Webster, Ana Exeni, and Genevieve Spink came out and dominated in their individual matches and their double matches.
"The three of them are playing better than they have since I have been here, and they will play important roles in our success." said Young.
Tomorrow the Shockers will take on #73 Tulsa at 3:30pm tomorrow at the Michael Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.
"We are excited for our match up with Tulsa tomorrow," said Young, "Tulsa is one of the premier tennis programs in the country and enter the match nationally ranked, so this will allow us to measure our development as a program and assess where we must improve the rest of the season".
