Jamell Cervantez is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for Wichita State.
 
Cervantez joined the Shockers after serving as an assistant coach at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan., for seven seasons.
 
During his tenure with the Blue Dragons, they won the 2014 and 2017 Jayhawk West championships. In addition, Hutchinson produced a pair of National Players of the Year, four All-Americans, three national Gold Glove winners, two Jayhawk West MVPs, two Jayhawk West Pitchers of the Year and 31 all-conference honorees.
 
Prior to becoming an assistant at Hutchinson, Cervantez served as a student assistant at Cincinnati, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2012.
 
A native of Topeka, Kan., he was a standout player for Hutchinson from 2008-10, receiving a medical redshirt for the 2009 season. Cervantez hit .351 with eight homers, 20 extra-base hits, 58 runs, 37 RBI and 33 stolen bases during the 2010 season when the Blue Dragons advanced to the NJCAA World Series.
 
After playing at Hutchinson, Cervantez went to Cincinnati, where he hit .320 in 23 games before suffering a career-ending injury.
 
He graduated from Topeka West High School in 2007 and received an associate's degree from Hutchinson in 2010.
