DENTON, Texas – Aeryn Shuman homered twice and drove in four runs to give Wichita State a come-from-behind 6-4 win over North Texas Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
Wichita State (31-15, 17-6) extended its win streak to 11 and clinched its fourth consecutive series with the victory.
Shuman recorded her first career multi-home run game, while her four RBIs set a new career high. Three of her four home runs this season have come in the first two games of the series.
Only five other Shockers recorded a hit in the game with
Ausha Moore smacking her league leading 19th home run of the season.
Jodie Epperson drove in the other Shockers' run on a single. Doubles from
Trinity Allen and
Mackenzie Rooney and a
Johnna Schroeder single rounded out the hits.
Kammie Smith and
Kinzey Woody both saw their hit streaks come to an end.
Ava Sliger only made it through 2.1 innings in the start, as the Mean Green touched her up for four runs on seven hits and a walk.
Jade Sanders (5-4) earned the win, tossing 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just one hit and a walk, while striking out four.
After both teams stranded a pair of runners in the first inning, Shuman put the Shockers on the board in the top of the second with her second home run in as many days. In the bottom of the second North Texas responded with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. It marked the first time Wichita State had trailed since the opening game of a doubleheader on April 11 vs. UTSA.
In the bottom of the third, North Texas chased Sliger from the game after the Mean Green extended their lead to 4-1.
Wichita State's bats were quiet for three straight innings until the top of the sixth. Epperson drove a single back up the middle, scoring
Kinzey Woody to cut the deficit to 4-2. The very next batter, Shuman, stepped in and delivered the go-ahead three-run bomb on the first pitch of the at bat, catapulting the Shockers into the lead, 5-4. For Shuman, it was her second homer of the game, as she was responsible for four of the team's five runs.
Moore added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on her solo shot to center.
