Shockers Run-Rule Drake, Lose Shootout to Miami (OH)

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Wichita State downed Drake, 10-1 in five innings, before losing to Miami (Ohio) in a shootout, 8-7, on Saturday at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
 
The Shockers (10-7) won their 11th straight game against Drake (4-9) behind four home runs but fell in a back-and-forth slugfest to Miami (13-4) in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
 
Wichita State 10, Drake 1 (5 innings) 
 
Wichita State got to work early, as Johnna Schroeder drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Mickayla Tosch added another run with an RBI single to center field to give the Shockers a 2-0 lead.
 
In the second, Chloe Rhine, Mackenzie Rooney and Ausha Moore led off the inning with back-to-back-to-back solo home runs to make it 5-0. It was the second time this season the Shockers have hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in a game.
 
Later in the inning, Trinity Allen roped a ball down the left-field line to bring home two more runs, giving the Shockers a 7-0 advantage.
 
After two scoreless innings, Kammie Smith pushed the Shockers over the run-rule threshold with a three-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth, her first collegiate homer.
 
Needing three outs to end the game, Drake got its first run off of Wichita State's Janelle Wilson, but Wilson closed out the game with a strikeout to secure the 10-1 run-rule win.
 
Gabby Fakes (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Moore went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two extra-base hits. Scott and Rhine each had two hits.

In their second game of the day, the Shockers again struck early when Allen ripped a ball through the infield to bring two home two runs in the top of the first.
 
The RedHawks responded with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly.
 
In the next inning, Moore recorded her fifth hit of the day, a two-run home run high over the wall in left field to make it 4-1.
 
Miami answered in the bottom half, scoring three runs on a sacrifice bunt and a two-run shot to tie the game at 4-4.
 
After Allen singled to open the fourth, Tosch blasted a two-run home run to give the Shockers the lead back at 6-4. Later in the inning, Rooney added a run on a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 7-4.
 
The RedHawks fired back, scoring four runs in the following frame to take their first lead of the game at 8-7. Neither side managed to score over the final three innings, with Miami turning a 6-4-3 double play in the top of the seventh to end the game.
 
Nihart (3-4) took the loss for the Shockers in 2.2 innings of relief. Moore added two hits to her total for the day, adding three RBIs and scoring five times.
