Shockers Fight Back to Beat Iowa, 4-2

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Wichita State earned its second win in as many days with a 4-2 victory over Iowa on Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex.

The Shockers (4-3) rallied after dropping five first sets in singles to stun Iowa (3-4), earning their first win over the Hawkeyes in Iowa City since March 5, 1983.

"It was another great team win today," head coach Jacob Eddins said. "We keep finding different ways to win, which really speaks to the depth of this team right now."

In doubles, the Shockers applied immediate pressure as Anne Knuettel and Vichitraporn Vimuktananda cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3. The Hawkeyes responded with a 6-2 win over Theodora Chantava and Kristina Kudryavtseva at No. 2, leaving the point to be decided at No. 1.

No. 24-ranked Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli battled back from down 3-2, holding serve, breaking serve, and then holding again to take a 5-3 lead. After Iowa held to win the next game, the Shockers closed out a 6-4 win to secure the doubles point.

In singles, the Hawkeyes surged, taking five of six first sets.

The lone Shocker to win her first set, Chantava, appeared headed for a third set after falling behind 4-1 in the second. The senior responded by winning five straight games to defeat her Iowa opponent 6-2, 6-4, giving Wichita State a 2-0 lead.

Nearly 40 minutes passed before another court finished as Iowa earned its first point with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Wang at No. 1 to cut the deficit to 2-1.

On the four remaining courts, all four Shockers rallied to win their second set after dropping the first.

Kudryavtseva was the first to complete a comeback, posting a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4 to put Wichita State ahead 3-1.

Iowa answered as Knuettel's rally came up short in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 loss at No. 6, trimming the margin to 3-2.

Needing just one more point, Vimuktananda delivered, dominating the third set against her opponent, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 to clinch the match for the Shockers.

"This is a special group that fights for one another and is playing for something bigger than themselves," Eddins said. "We can't wait to get back on our home courts next weekend."
