AMES, Iowa — Wichita State outlasted Iowa State on Saturday to earn its second victory over a Power Four opponent this season.
Â
The Shockers (3-3) thrived with
Giorgia Roselli and
Theodora Chantava back in the lineup. The win over Iowa State (0-2) was the Shockers' first true road victory of the season and their first over the Cyclones since 1996.
Â
"This was a great win on the road today against a good Iowa State team," said head coach
Jacob Eddins. "We knew it was going to be a battle, and the girls stepped up in some big moments today."
Â
In doubles, the Shockers secured the point in dominant fashion.
Kristina Kudryavtseva and
Theodora Chantava earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Soon after,
Anne Knuettel and
Vichitraporn Vimuktananda secured the point with another 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Â
The Cyclones tightened things up in singles, as the teams split the first sets evenly at three apiece.
Â
Iowa State quickly tied the match up, defeating Knuettel, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6, and then took a 2-1 lead by fighting off Kudryavtseva 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4.
Â
Roselli responded rapidly for the Shockers, conquering No. 45-ranked Maria Alberto Villar 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 to tie the match. It marked the highest-ranked win of Roselli's career and tied for the eighth-highest in program history.
Â
Soon after, Vimuktananda put Wichita State back in front with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 5, moving the Shockers within one point of victory.
Â
Chantava and
Xin Tong Wang were left battling, both heading to third sets. In her first match back from illness - and on her birthday - Chantava delivered the clinch for Wichita State, storming back to beat her opponent 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-2 to secure the road victory for the Shockers, 4-2.
Â
"I'm proud of the fight we showed across the board today," Eddins said. "This group is excited for another big opportunity tomorrow."
