VERMILLION, S.D. – Wichita State (8-3) used big offensive performances from Sydney Dunning and Brooklyn Leggett to defeat South Dakota (7-4), 3-1, at the South Dakota Classic. The Shockers won by scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-15 and 26-24.

Dunning led the Shockers with 19 kills and 12 digs, while Leggett had 17 kills and hit .410. Jordan Heatherly finished with 43 assists, while Gabi Maas had 23 digs.

The Shockers jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set after back-to-back kills from Dunning. Another Dunning kill pushed the lead to 23-11 and WSU closed out the set 25-14 on a block by Leggett and Maddie Wilson.

A Heatherly service ace gave the Shocks a quick 4-1 lead in the second set, but the Coyotes responded to take an 8-7 lead. The set went back and forth until the Coyotes pulled away down the stretch to take the set 25-22.

Back-to-back Shocker blocks gave WSU a 13-6 lead in the third set and the Shockers scored the final four points of the set for the 25-15 win.

The Shockers grabbed an early lead in the fourth, but USD tied it at 12. The two teams traded points until a Leggett kill, Shocker block and Dunning ace gave WSU a 22-19 lead. The Shockers reached match point at 24-22, but the Coyotes came back to tie it at 24. WSU scored the final two points on Coyote errors to take the set 26-24.

The Shockers wrap up the South Dakota Classic against Villanova on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. CT.
