Shockers Take Down Arkansas, 3-2

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State defeated Arkansas 3-2 for their first win of the season on Sunday at Charles Koch Arena. 
The two teams alternated set victories with scores of 25-18, 13-25, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-6 in the third match of the Shocker Volleyball Classic.
The Shockers (1-1) recorded a .261 hitting percentage with 64 kills and 21 errors. The Razorbacks (1-1) hit .220, with 60 kills and 23 errors.
Sydney Dunning led the Shockers with a double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs. Brooklyn Leggett added 18 kills, while Jordan Heatherly recorded 50 assists. Gabi Maas finished with a career-high 28 digs.
Chris Lamb, the Shockers head coach, was pleased with how the team bounced back after Friday night's loss to Kennesaw State.
"They were resilient, and they came back and they were ready to compete against a very good program," Lamb said.
The Shockers play Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. and BYU at 7 p.m. on Friday in a doubleheader at the BYU Nike Invitational in Provo, Utah.
Set 1:
  • WSU won the set comfortably with a 25-18 victory over Arkansas
  • Leggett started off the match with two kills after leading WSU in kills on Friday night
  • Gabi Maas and Jordan Heatherly recorded three assists each early in the set
  • The Shockers went on an 8-1 run to take a 17-12 lead over the Razorbacks and didn't look back
Set 2:
  • The Shockers fell to the Razorbacks 25-13
  • Dunning recorded two kills in a row to put WSU up 2-0 to start the set
  • It was a back and forth set until Arkansas went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead
Set 3:
  • Wichita State took a 2-1 lead over Arkansas after winning the third set 25-19
  • The Shockers went on a 4-0 run to go up 19-13
  • Dunning recorded six kills on nine swings and Leggett added four kills.
Set 4:
  • Arkansas forced a fifth set after a 25-21 victory over Wichita State in the fourth set
  • Libero Gabi Maas was all over the court digging everything that came her way
  • After a 14-5 deficit, the Shockers clawed back to make it a competitive set
  • Dunning scored two straight kills to cut the Razorback lead to three but Arkansas closed out the set
Set 5:
  • The Shockers dominated the fifth set by a score of 15-6 to win the match
  • WSU started off hot with an 8-4 lead before switching sides
  • Wichita State capped of the set with a 9-2 run culminating in a kill from Maddie Wilson
