Shockers Sweep Memphis, Earn #7 Seed

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State got seven scoreless innings from their bullpen and some late offense to defeat Memphis 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium, completing the sweep of the three-game series.

The win, combined with Rice's loss at UTSA, moves the Shockers up to the #7 seed in the American Athletic Conference tournament bracket. Wichita State will face #2 Charlotte at 3:00 pm CT on Tuesday, May 20 at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida.

The three-game sweep is Wichita State's first in program history against Memphis.

Wichita State (20-34, 11-16) had to dig out of an early hole as Memphis scored the game's first run just two batters into the contest. Cade Greer doubled to open the game and Justin Fogel singled him in for a 1-0 lead against WSU starter Jeremiah Arnett.

The Shockers, who had stolen 23 bases all season entering the contest, used their speed to create a run in the third. Camden Johnson worked a leadoff work before stealing second and third base ahead of a Josh Livingston RBI single that tied the game at 1-1. Wichita State stole a season-high five bases in the game, including a career-best three from Johnson.

The Johnson-Livingston duo was at it again in the seventh to break the deadlock, this time when Johnson doubled to open the inning and Livingston yanked a single through the right side to score him for a 2-1 lead.

Gannon Snyder produced the Shockers final run of the day with an RBI single in the eighth that plated Kam Durnin, who had walked and stole second with one out.

That proved to be enough offense for the Shocker bullpen. After Arnett worked a scoreless second inning, WSU got two zeroes from Arnad Mulamekic followed by three hitless, shutout frames from Colton Vercoe (2-1). Jack Mount escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth with a huge strikeout, then Caleb Anderson fired a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Caden Robinson (2-4) took the loss for Memphis, allowing one run over 2.1 innings in relief.
