No. 58 Shockers Fall in AAC Quarterfinals to No. 52 Tulsa

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The fifth-seeded No. 58 Wichita State women's tennis team lost in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3, to the fourth-seeded No. 52 Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Friday afternoon at Leftwich Tennis Center.

The loss for the Shockers ends their season with a record of 13-10. Tulsa (18-7) advances to the AAC Semifinals to face No. 27 and top seed Florida Atlantic on Saturday.

"A tough result for us to swallow because we obviously had chances, but credit Tulsa for playing just a hair better in crucial moments," head coach Colin Foster said. "The loss today doesn't take anything away from what we accomplished this year."

In doubles, Tulsa struck first with a 6-2 win over Anne Knuettel and Clara Whitaker at court three, but Kristina Kudryavtseva and Theodora Chantava answered back with a 6-3 win at court two, evening up doubles.

At court one, Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli fell into a 5-2 hole that they could not climb out of, falling 6-4 and giving Tulsa the doubles point.

In singles, the teams split the first sets in singles at three apiece, which would spell doom for the Shockers.

Chantava struck first for WSU, evening the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at court four.

Tulsa retook the lead with a 7-5, 6-1 over Wang at court one, but Knuettel answered back with a triumphant 6-2, 6-3 victory to tie the match at 2-2.

Roselli would give the Shockers their first lead of the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at court two, but Tulsa followed suit by beating Tatyana Nikolenko 6-2, 7-5, sending the match to be decided at court three.

At court three, a third-set battle brewed with Kudryavtseva fighting back to win her second set, 7-5.

In the decisive third set, a 3-0 hole was too much for Wichita State's Kudryavtseva to climb out of, losing 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, giving Tulsa the 4-3 win.

The three Shockers to win their first sets, Roselli, Chantava, Knuettel all won their singles matches, while the three who dropped their opening set, Wang, Kudryavtseva, and Nikolenko, all fell to their Tulsa opponents.

"As I've said all year, we're getting big contributions from every spot, but we just couldn't quite get to four today," Foster said. "Really proud of this group and excited for the returners to build on this year that saw us get back into the national rankings and knocking on the door of an at-large bid and conference tournament championship run."
