Masters, Parrish Podium on Day One of AAC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Wichita's State's Destiny Masters and Josh Parrish secured podium finishes on day one of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
For the third-straight AAC Indoor Championships, Masters landed on the podium in the pentathlon, scoring 4,065 points. After a disappointing indoor season riddled with illness and injuries, the senior from El Dorado, Kan.  put together a silver medal pentathlon to score eight points for the Shockers.
 
Sophomore Josh Parrish claimed his first AAC Indoor Championship medal, placing third in the long jump with a leap of 7.41m/24'3.75". Both Masters and Parrish claimed All-Conference honors for their podium performances, and the pair were two of 14 Shockers to score points on the first day of competition.
 
Wichita State scored nine points in the men's weight throw as Athan Huelskamp and Loudan Hicks went 4-5 in the event. Huelskamp threw 19.03m/62'5.25", and Hicks threw 19.01m/62'4.5".
 
Adrian Diaz Lopez just missed the podium in the 5,000 meters with a fourth-place finish, running 14:27.53 to score five points.
 
The Wichita State women collected 14 points in the pentathlon with a fifth-place performance from Brianna Utecht and a seventh-place finish from Sadie Millard adding to Masters' eight points. Utecht moved up to No. 7 all-time in Wichita State history with a score of 3,878 points, and Millard scored a personal-best 3,783 points.
 
In the women's pole vault Kylie Scott cleared a personal-best 3.87m/12'8.25" to place fourth and score five points for the team. A disappointing no-height from Arantxa Cortez, the No. 4 seed, left her out of the scoring.
 
The Shocker men suffered a setback in the men's high jump, underperforming their projections but still came away with 5.3 points in the event as Luke Czarnecki took fourth with a clearance of 1.98m/6'6" and Darius Graham tied for eighth with a jump of 1.93m/6'4".
 
In addition to Parrish's six long jump points, Chairo Ogbebor added three more to the team total with a sixth-place long jump, leaping 7.20m/23'7.5".
 
Rikard Trogen Hedin scored the first point of the meet for the Shockers with an eighth-place clearance of 4.51m/14'9.5" in the pole vault. Both distance medley relays scored points for the team with the men taking sixth for three points and the women finishing eighth for one point.
 
Seven Shockers made it out of Friday's prelims and will compete in the finals on Saturday. Yared Kidane ran the fastest 800 meters to get the auto-qualifier to the men's final, and Audrey Parson ran a personal-best 2:12.66 to take the last spot in the women's 800-meter final.
 
Kate Campos, Tyler Carroll and Jaleel Montgomery all claimed spots in the 60-meter hurdles final, while an off race from Josh Parrish, the No. 2 seed, left him out of Saturday's final. Montgomery also earned a spot in the 60-meter final, and Kalyn Willingham ran a personal-best 5:01.02 to advance to the mile final.
 
Sydney Brown clocked the No. 2 200-meter time in Shocker history, running 24.10 to finish 10th, and Jason Parrish ran the seventh-fastest 200-meter time in program history, 21.56, to finish 12th. Joakim Genereux ran 21.37 to take ninth, all three Shockers just missing the finals.
 
After day one, Hudson Bailey and Luke Czarnecki sit in second and third in the heptathlon, and Trogen Hedin and Holden Atwood are in sixth and ninth.
 
The Wichita State men are in third, and the women are in fifth in the team standings after day one of competition. The second and final day of competition begins Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
