SAN DIEGO — Wichita State's
Xin Tong Wang and
Giorgia Roselli did not lose a set across two victories Thursday, earning a place in the semifinals of the ITA Conference Masters Doubles Championship.
Â
The Shockers first defeated Presbyterian's McKenzie Davis and Ladina Bruhin 6-2, 6-4, to move to the quarterfinals, where they dispatched No. 4 seeds Maeve Thornton and Francesca Mattioli of Tennessee 7-5, 6-3. As a pair, Wang and Roselli now have a 10-3 record and have won eight of their last nine matches dating to Oct. 12.
Â
In the first set against Presbyterian, the Shockers got off to another excellent start, turning a 4-1 lead into a 6-3 opening-set victory.
Â
In the second, the Presbyterian pair responded with a strong start, jumping out to their own 4-1 lead. The lead wasn't enough to fend off the Shockers, as Wang and Roselli rattled off five straight games to take the set 6-4 and earn a place in the quarterfinals against Tennessee.
Â
Against Tennessee, the Shockers were chasing the Vols throughout, as Tennessee's victory in the opening game kept them consistently ahead. Down 5-4, the Shockers won the next game to tie the set 5-5. They kept their momentum going, winning the next two games to take the first set 7-5.
Â
In the second set, Tennessee again grabbed an early advantage, opening play with a 3-1 lead, but as the Shockers had done all day, they made another comeback, winning five straight games to take the set 6-3 and move on to Saturday's semifinals.
Â
In the semis, the Shockers will meet the top-seeded and ninth-ranked pair of Mélodie Collard and Vivian Yang from Virginia at 4:30 p.m. Central time Friday.
Â
With a win, the Shockers will earn a place in the doubles final Sunday and secure a berth in the 2025 NCAA Doubles Championship. With a loss, they'll fall to the third-place match, where they would face the loser of the other semifinal. A win in that match would also earn the Shockers an NCAA bid.
