TAMPA, Fla. – Wichita State (19-10) advanced to the semifinals of the American Championship with a 3-0 victory over No. 4 seed North Texas (21-9). The Shockers won by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18.

WSU will next face No. 1 seed Rice in the semifinals at 11 a.m. CT on Sat., Nov. 22.

The Shockers hit .438 as a team and were led by
Sydney Dunning who had 20 kills, while hitting .410.
Brooklyn Leggett added 14 kills and hit .545.
Jordan Heatherly had a match-high 37 assists and
Gabi Maas added 16 digs.

The Mean Green took a quick 4-1 lead in the first set, but the Shockers tied it at six after a UNT error. UNT again went up by three at 15-12, but the Shockers responded with a 4-0 run to go in front 16-15. The two teams traded points until a 5-0 run put WSU up 23-18. A Leggett kill brought the Shockers to set point at 24-19 and another Leggett kill gave WSU the 25-20 win.

UNT raced out to an 8-5 lead in the second set, but the Shockers scored five of the next six points to take a 10-9 lead. A Dunning kill pushed the lead to 13-10 and another one made it 18-13 Shockers. A Leggett kill made the score 24-18 and a Dunning kill finished the set at 25-20.

The Shockers grabbed an early 4-1 lead in the third set behind the serving of
Grace Hett. UNT scored three-straight to tie it at six, but the Shockers scored five of the next six points for an 11-7 lead. The Mean Green scored five-straight to take a 13-12 lead, but the Shockers answered with a 5-0 run of their own for a 17-13 lead. Back-to-back service aces from Maas pus WSU up 20-16 and WSU won the set 25-18 after two-straight Dunning kills.
