Shockers Power Past UTSA, 3-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Wichita State totaled 15 blocks on the way to a 3-1 win at UTSA (10-8, 3-4). The Shockers (13-6, 5-2) won by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-17.
 
Brooklyn Leggett led the Shockers with 15 kills and six blocks, while Sydney Dunning added 12 kills and 13 digs. Jordan Heatherly finished with 31 assists and 10 digs and Katie Galligan added 18 digs. Allie Paulsen had a career-night for the Shockers with a career-high nine kills and 10 blocks.
 
The Shockers raced out to a 7-1 lead in the first set before the Roadrunners cut it to three at 10-7. The two teams traded points for the rest of the set until WSU closed it out on a 6-1 run that was highlighted by two kills from McKenzie Jones, a Paulsen kill, a Heatherly service ace and a Dunning kill for the 25-18 win.
 
The second set looked a lot like the first with WSU grabbing an early 7-1 lead. Back-to-back kills from Emerson Wilford and Jones pushed the lead to 18-11 and WSU scored four of the final five points for a 25-15 win.
 
Set three went back and forth early until the Shockers used a 5-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. A Jones kill put the Shockers up 23-19, but UTSA reeled off six-straight to end the set with a 25-23 win.
 
WSU grabbed a 9-1 lead in the fourth set and went up 20-14 after back-to-back kills from Leggett. The Shockers ended the set on a 3-0 run with kills from Leggett and Maddie Wilson and a service ace from Sarah Musial for the 25-17 win.
 
The Shockers are next in action on Sun., Oct. 19 at conference leader Rice at 1 p.m.
