NORMAN, Okla.  – Wichita State sophomore
Zaid Al Mashni's run to the singles Round of 16 highlighted the week for the Shockers at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships at Headington Family Tennis Center.

Al Mashni, the top seed in singles qualifying at regionals, dispatched Oral Roberts' Lucas Couy 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the main draw.Â

In the main draw, the sophomore defeated Memphis' Marcos Castro Fabra 6-4, 7-6 (8) in the Round of 64, and followed it with a win over six-seed Jakub Vrba from Arkansas 6-3, 6-4 to move into the Round of 16.Â

In the round of 16, Al Mashni fell to Arkansas' Ben Weintraub 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, ending his terrific run.

Elsewhere, freshman
Pablo Roche Alcaya, an automatic entry into the main draw, earned his first win as a Shocker with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Creighton's Rocky McKenzie on Thursday, before falling to Oklahoma's Hank Trondson in the Round of 32.Â

In doubles, the pair of
Amir Milushev and
Ilias Worthington earned an 8-6 win in the Round of 64 over Nebraska's Jeri Lassila and Joan Torres Espinosa, but were defeated by the eight-seed Trondson and Asahi Harazaki from Oklahoma, 8-5.

Next up, select Shockers will head to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the American Conference Individual Championships Oct. 22-26.
