WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State baseball and head coach Brian Green announced Friday the promotion of Anthony Claggett to assistant head coach. Claggett will continue to serve as the program's pitching coach.

Claggett helped the Shockers to a 32-29 record in his first season as pitching coach, guiding the Wichita State arms to a 5.07 ERA that ranked second in the American Athletic Conference. Working with a pitching staff that returned just four pitchers and 71.1 total innings from the year prior, Claggett and the Shockers also finished top three in the AAC in hits allowed per nine innings (8.73) and WHIP (1.49).

Under Claggett's tutelage, returners Caden Favors and Nate Adler developed into two of the most reliable arms in the conference working as a starter and back-end reliever, respectively. Favors earned First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region honors as the ace of the WSU staff, going 9-4 with a 3.21 ERA over 16 starts. Adler went 1-2 with a 4.03 ERA and a team-high six saves over 22 appearances in relief, ranking fifth in the American Athletic Conference with his six saves.

A talented group of freshmen blossomed into meaningful roles as 34 of Wichita State's 61 games were started by freshmen. All told, 75.2% of WSU's innings came from pitchers in their first season with the program, including junior college transfer Hunter Holmes who led the nation with 38 appearances.

Wichita State pitching notched three team shutouts and had 23 games in which opponents were held to three runs or fewer, helping the Shockers reach the American Athletic Conference tournament championship game for the first time in program history.
