WICHITA, Kan. -- Career games from
Jordan Rogers and
Jaden Gustafson combined with another quality start from
Caden Favors lifted Wichita State to a series-opening 10-6 win over Gonzaga on Friday night at Eck Stadium.
Rogers set a new career high with four hits and five RBI, while Gustafson established new personal bests with four hits of his own and three runs scored. Both Gustafson and
Camden Johnson finished a home run shy of the cycle as the Shockers (11-6) banged out 15 hits on the evening.
Wichita State fell into a quick 2-0 hole when Gonzaga (3-12) struck for two runs in the top of the first inning against Favors. A single and a double to open the game put runners at second and third, followed by a wild pitch and a run-scoring ground out from Jace Phelan for the early advantage.
That Bulldogs lead lasted until the third, when a hit by pitch and two singles loaded the bases for Rogers. After a mound visit and an offensive conference, Rogers crushed the first pitch he saw from Gonzaga starter Michael Cunneely (1-2) over the wall in center for a go-ahead grand slam and a 4-2 lead.
The round-tripper is Rogers' fifth home run of the season after homering once in his first two seasons combined.
Favors (4-0) buckled down after the rocky start, allowing just an unearned run in the fifth over the next five innings. The southpaw struck out four and walked just one, turning in another quality start.
Wichita State lengthened their lead in the late innings against the Gonzaga bullpen. With two outs in the sixth,
Camden Johnson tripled to the gap in right-center and
Mauricio Millan followed with an RBI single that pushed the lead to 5-3. In the seventh, Rogers singled home another run and
Darnell Parker Jr. lifted a sacrifice fly that made it 7-3. Millan capped the inning with another two-out, two-run single for a 9-3 advantage.
Gonzaga tried to make things interesting with a three-run inning of their own in the eighth, but the Shockers answered back with a
Seth Stroh sacrifice fly in the bottom half to restore a 10-6 cushion. Reliever
Nate Adler took it from there, closing out the contest with 1.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
Cunneely took the loss for Gonzaga, allowing four runs on six hits over his four innings of work.
The Shockers will look to clinch the series in game two on Saturday afternoon. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
