Support Women's Athletics for National Girls and Women in Sports Day

2/7/2024 6:00:00 AM

On National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), Wichita State University Athletics is proud to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in athletics. Every day, our female student-athletes utilize the power of practice, preparation and competition to grow personally and professionally.

Our women's programs and female student-athletes are no strangers to success. Since joining the American Athletic Conference, softball has had four AAC Players of the Year (Sydney McKinney twice, Addie Barnard, Mackenzie Wright) and has made the NCAA Tournament three straight seasons and four of the last five. Softball has also had three All-Americans in program history, all within the last three years and won AAC Regular Season Championships in 2021 and 2023.

Since 2017, Shocker Volleyball has produced three postseason appearances, highlighted by an AAC championship and serving as NCAA tournament host in 2017 and an NIVC championship in 2023. Over the last seven seasons, the Shockers have earned 17 All-Conference selections and six All-Region honorees along the way. Most recently, the 2023 club captured the first national postseason championship in program history with a dominant run through the NIVC bracket, dropping just one set in five matches to win the title.

In track and field and cross country, since joining the American WSU has produced two Al-Americans, one AAC team championship, 14 AAC individual conference champions and nine new school records. Women's basketball has produced four all-conference players and one all-freshman team selection. Taryn Torgerson won the AAC Individual Championship for women's golf in 2018 and Fatima Buzhukova was a NCAA Tournament singles qualifier for women's tennis in 2018, which also featured a team NCAA appearance.

Our women's programs and student-athletes have done all this while achieving at record levels in the classroom, with all-time highs in GPA, Graduation Success Rate (GSR), and Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Please consider contributing to an Athletics Women's Fund in honor of our female student-athletes' accomplishments and to position Wichita State for even greater success in women's athletics in the years ahead. Your donation will directly impact the academic and athletic experience of current and future Shocker student-athletes. Please visit the NGWSD Campaign Page to make your gift.
