Paul Mills went back to his Houston pipeline to sign 6-foot-6 forward Tyrus Rathan-Mayes.
"Tyrus is as a productive high school player as there is in the entire country," Mills said "He is very proficient with his skills to score and facilitate. He's an excellent rebounder and makes contributions to the game in a variety of ways. I refer to him as a 'stat sheet stuffer' because he can impact the game in different and significant ways. I'm glad Tyrus will be a Shocker."
Rathan-Mayes is the second Shocker to sign with Mills out of Legacy School of Sport Sciences, joining current Wichita State freshman
Zion Pipkin. It marks the second straight recruiting class, Mills has landed a highly-rated prospect from former Shocker standout P.J. Couisnard's AAU program (Cooz Elite) in Houston. He's listed as a 3-star recruit according to 247Sports and the 13th-ranked player in the state of Texas. Rathan-Mayes is coming off a season averaging 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists, earning first team all-state and first team all-district honors.
He's the son of Tharon Mayes and Marilyn Rathan, and has two brothers Xavier and Shemar. His father, Tharon, was a standout on the basketball team at Florida State. Xavier followed in their father's footsteps starring at Florida State for three seasons and had a brief stint in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies. Shemar played basketball in college for Youngstown State, UNC Wilmington and Mercyhurst.
