Wilson Invitational to Honor Longtime Coaches Herm and Pat

1/24/2024 5:49:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State track and field is set to host the biggest meet the Heskett Center has ever seen with 29 teams and 891 athletes competing over the course of three days.

The meet begins Thursday with the multi-event competitions, continues Friday with day two of the multis, weight throw, triple jump, women's pole vault and the 5,000 meters, and concludes Saturday with the remainder of the events running from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Wichita State will not compete its full team as a handful of athletes will use this week as a rest week before competing at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Feb. 2-3.

ABOUT THE MEET
The meet, previously named the Herm Wilson Invitational, will be called the Wilson Invitational starting this year, to honor Wichita State's longtime pole vault coach Pat Wilson as well as longtime head cross country and track and field coach Herm Wilson.

The Shocker track and field family chose to shorten the meet's name to honor both coaches after Coach Pat's passing in August.

Pat Wilson served as an assistant coach for the Shocker track and field program for 16 years before stepping away to focus on his health last fall. In his time with the Shockers, he coached six NCAA All-Americans, seven conference champions and 18 all-conference athletes. Prior to coaching, Pat pole vaulted for the Shockers from 1994-98.

Herm Wilson served as the Wichita State head cross country and track and field coach for 16 years, sending four cross country teams to the NCAA Championships, producing nine All-American athletes and 87 individual conference champions. His cross country teams dominated the Missouri Valley Conference in the 1970s, winning five consecutive league championships. He also coached Olympic long jumper Preston Carrington.
