WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State was held to a .100 hitting percentage by a smothering Colorado defense, falling in straight sets to the Buffaloes 25-21, 25-11, 25-23 on Saturday night at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers (3-4) went blow-for-blow for the first half of the opening frame, drawing level at 12-12 following a Colorado service error. But the Buffaloes (6-2) took command with a 7-2 run that staked them to a 19-14 lead. A Shocker flurry that included a service ace from
Morgan Weber prompted a timeout at 19-16, but Colorado used key kills from Maya Tabron down the stretch to put the set away.
After the Shockers and Buffaloes split the first eight points of the second set, Colorado unleashed a 17-3 run to cruise to a comfortable 25-11 win. Wichita State hit -.154 in the frame, forced into seven attack errors as Colorado's strong serves kept WSU off-balance. Redshirt freshman setter
Lauren Wheeler made her collegiate debut in the set and went on to record five assists in the third.
Brooklyn Leggett also came off the bench in the second and notched a trio of block assists.
WSU led 13-11 midway through the third set, but another Colorado run staked the Buffaloes to a lead they would hold the rest of the way. The Shockers managed to pull level at 22-22 with a 6-2 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from
Sophia Rohling and one apiece from
Natalie Foster and
Brylee Kelly, but two Shocker service errors sandwiched around a Tabron kill clinched the set and the sweep for Colorado.
Tabron led all scorers with 12 kills for Colorado, who hit .247 as a team. The Buffaloes also racked up nine aces on the night, getting four from libero Morgan Riddle and three from Emma Torstenson.
Rohling and Foster paced the Shockers with six kills apiece.
Morgan Weber had nine digs to lead the way defensively, while Foster piled up six block assists after recording eight blocks on Thursday against Kansas.
Wichita State is back in action at the Northern Colorado Classic next week in Greeley, Colorado. First serve of the opening match against Bradley is scheduled for 4:00 pm CT.
