Wichita State’s Sokolosky Wins Kansas Amateur

7/25/2023 3:06:00 PM

BASEHOR, Kan. – In a tournament that saw three Wichita State golfers advance to the quarterfinals, redshirt senior and Kansas transfer Zach Sokolosky took home the Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship trophy after defeating fellow Shocker, Michael Winslow, in the 36-hole final round on Sunday afternoon.

Five Shockers, Lucas Scheufler, Ty Adkins, Connor Geist, Michael Winslow, and the aforementioned Sokolosky advanced out of the qualifying rounds with Sokolosky being slated as the top-seed after shooting -14.

Wichita State head men's golf coach Judd Easterling said, "The Kansas Amateur is the biggest annual golf tournament in the state of Kansas. It was great to see all five of our guys who competed qualify for the match play portion and it was great to be able to go out and support them at Falcon Lakes."

On his way to the title, top-seeded Sokolosky defeated reigning Kansas Am champion and Oklahoma golf commit Asher Whitaker in the round-of-16 to advance into the quarterfinals of the tournament.

"Zach was solid all week long," said Easterling. "He possessed great confidence and I think that's what enabled him to go out and win the whole thing."

In the quarterfinals, Sokolosky was joined by teammates Geist and Winslow, with Winslow advancing to face Sokolosky in the 36-hole final round.

In the 36-hole final, neither Shocker could gain a significant advantage throughout. Winslow and Sokolosky each possessed a two-stroke lead at different points, but that was all the separation one could manage on the other.

In the end, it was Sokolosky's birdie on hole 34 that would crown him as champion, as it gave him a one stroke lead late that he would maintain across the final two holes to become the 113th Kansas Amateur Match Play Champion.

"Sunday's final was a great battle between our guys," said Easterling. "It was an exciting final that came down to the wire."

Winslow wraps up the summer season with two runner-up finishes under his belt, as he also finished second in the Missouri Amateur back on June 26th.

"Michael had a great summer. He put in a lot of hard work, and it paid off with two big-time runner-up finishes this summer." said Easterling.

The Shockers will look to carry these strong performances into the 2023-24 season which begins in September.
