Doubles Teams Dominate But Shockers Fall to TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Wichita State women's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 62 TCU on Monday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in a dual match scheduled just four  days in advance.

With the final week of the regular season approaching, both sides found themselves with an open date in the calendar and in need of a quality win to boost their respective ITA rankings. The solution: an impromptu matchup in Fort Worth.

"This all came together just in the last week, so I was pleased with how well-prepared we were to play on such short notice.," head coach Colin Foster said.

The Shockers (11-9) captured the doubles point, helped by Jessica Anzo and Kristina Kudryavtseva's 6-4 victory over TCU's 81st-ranked tandem of Helena Narmont and Yu-Chin Tsai, and went toe-to-toe with the Horned Frogs in the early portion of singles.

TCU (11-7) took opening sets on all six singles courts but two of them came in tiebreakers.

"Doubles was intense and we got off to some great starts in singles," Foster said. "Unfortunately, TCU didn't blink and was able to turn those first sets in their favor. Once they had all six first sets the scoreboard, pressure increased and TCU really played well to close it out."

The Horned Frogs swept matches on courts 1-4 to put an early end to the proceedings.

WSU will wrap up the regular season this Saturday, Apr. 15 against Creighton at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. First serve is 1 p.m. CT.
