WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State scored seven times in the bottom of the third inning thanks to five extra-base hits, cruising past Stetson 9-3 on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers (8-6) entered the inning trailing 3-2, but hung a touchdown on the board for what would prove to be the final runs of the game. Doubles from
David Herring and
Garrett Pennington tied the game at 3-3, then one batter later
Mauricio Millan added an RBI double of his own to make it 4-3. A bunt single from
Seth Stroh put runners at the corners, and another bunt from
Jack Little brought home Millan for a 5-3 advantage.
Chuck Ingram made it four doubles in the inning with an opposite field two-bagger to score Stroh, and
Jordan Rogers drove home Little with an RBI groundout.
Brock Rodden put the finishing touches on the inning with a two-run homer to right.
That was more than enough support for Wichita State starter
Payton Tolle (3-0), who bounced back from a rocky second inning to keep the Hatters (9-7) off the board in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames. The southpaw finished his day with nine strikeouts, allowing seven hits and three runs while walking only one batter. Tolle also opened the scoring for the Shockers offensively, booming a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the first.
Robert Cranz picked up his first career save with three dominant innings in relief, fanning three while allowing just one baserunner.
The Wichita State defense was excellent, making a trio of highlight reel plays. Rogers tracked down a long drive in the sixth, making the catch just before crashing into the left field fence. Cranz speared a hard line drive back to the mound to end the seventh, and Stroh made a tremendous sliding catch in foul territory for the first out of the ninth.
Starter Anthony DeFabbia (2-1) took the loss for Stetson, tagged with seven hits and eight runs in 2.2 innings.
The Shockers and Hatters conclude the series on Sunday. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 pm.Â
