Shockers Best Tulsa, Advance to NIVC Quarterfinals

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State got 15 kills from Sophia Rohling and another stellar defensive effort to topple Tulsa 25-12, 15-25, 25-16, 25-21 on Friday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena. With the win, the Shockers advance to the quarterfinals of the NIVC, where they will host Drake on Wednesday, December 6 at 6:30 pm.

Wichita State has now beaten the Golden Hurricane 20 consecutive times in Wichita and 10 straight times overall.

The match featured three lopsided sets before a closely contested fourth. Wichita State (23-8) dominated the opener with defense, holding Tulsa to a -.062 hitting percentage (9 kills, 12 attack errors) while Rohling came out of the chute firing with four kills on seven swings. Tulsa actually held a brief lead at 7-6, but the Shockers unleashed a devastating 12-0 run with Izzi Strand at the service line that ended with Wichita State holding a commanding 18-7 lead. Tulsa's third service error of the set a few points later gave Wichita State the 1-0 advantage.

The script flipped in the second set, as Tulsa (18-15) took a quick 11-4 lead and never allowed the Shockers to string two points together. The Golden Hurricane had a sideout percentage of 87% (14-16) and added four service aces to keep the Shockers at bay. A Wichita State attack error evened the match at one set apiece.

The Shockers restored control with a thorough third set performance. WSU hit a blistering .410 in the frame and got excellent production on the left from both Brylee Kelly (five kills) and Emerson Wilford (three kills and two solo blocks). Kelly and Izzi Strand combined for five straight kills as part of a crucial spurt that opened up a 20-13 lead, and Tulsa never threatened the rest of the way. Natalie Foster got the Shockers home with a block and a kill for a 2-1 edge heading to the fourth.

Wichita State gradually created separation midway through the fourth, eventually lengthening the lead out to six points at 17-11 following consecutive Rohling kills. Tulsa fired back, slicing the margin all the way down to one thanks in large part to a trio of kills from star outside hitter Kayley Cassaday, the last of which made it 18-17. Three straight WSU points created cushion at 21-17, and the Shockers got to match point via their lone service ace of the day from Rohling. Tulsa stayed alive with consecutive points to claw within 24-21, but Morgan Stout slammed the subsequent chance off the block to wrap up the victory.

The Shockers hit a healthy .276 on the day led by Rohling's 15 kills at .387 and 11 terminations from Kelly. Foster turned in another efficient performance without an attack error, contributing eight kills on 14 swings. Defensively, WSU out-dug the Golden Hurricane 79-69, getting 20 ups from Katie Galligan and 17 each from Strand and Gabi Maas.
