Sokolosky Cards Top-5 Finish, Shockers Place Sixth as a Team

OMAHA, Neb. – The Wichita State men's golf team competed in the Big O Classic this week in Omaha, Nebraska at Indian Creek Golf Club. The Shockers put together a 6th place team finish and Zach Sokolosky carded a top-5 finish after an exceptional third round.
 
The Shockers put together a team score of 892 with rounds of 296, 302, and 294, 28-over par and 6th place in the team standings. The tournament host duo of Omaha and Creighton finished in a tie for first with Omaha taking the crown based on their score in the third and final round. 
The Shockers got off to a positive start in round one, thanks to a surplus of birdies from Blake Lorenz, Michael Winslow, and Aston Castillo. The Shockers briefly took the lead as a team, but some late trouble on the back nine saw the team stumble into 4th place where they would finish the round.
 
Competing in his first event of the year, Castillo put up a very impressive round that saw him take hold of the individual lead for a time and he finished the round just one stroke off the leader at -1.

The team got into a hole early in round two that they were not able to climb out of, finishing +14 for the round and sliding back into 8th place on the team leader board.
 
Lorenz had the  best round for the Shockers, finishing just one-over. He recorded the Shockers only birdie of the tournament on hole 11. Castillo finished two-over for the round, pushing him into 8th place.

In round three, the Shockers battled through some tough weather conditions to finish a very solid +6 for the round and landing themselves a 6th place finish for the tournament. Sokolosky put together an excellent final round, recording a score of just 69 (-3). This impressive result boosted him up to 5th place in the individual standings.

The next action for the Shockers is close to home, as the Shockers will host their lone home tournament of the year, the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas October 9-10.
