MBB Quotables: Brown Previews Memphis

1/17/2023 3:43:00 PM

Wichita State showed resiliency in comeback wins over South Florida and Tulsa, but Isaac Brown would prefer they avoid those types of deficits altogether. The Shocker head coach met with local media Tuesday afternoon with topics ranging from Jaykwon Walton's return and his impact on the rest of the lineup, Craig Porter Jr.'s penchant for points around the basket, and a preview of Thursday night's trip to Memphis.

HEAD COACH ISAAC BROWN ON…

…Thursday night's opponent, Memphis:
"They've got two really good players, Kendric Davis, player of the year last year in the conference, and DeAndre Williams inside. We've got to do a good job defending those two guys and trying to keep them out of the paint. We've got to be able to handle their tremendous pressure. The last two years, their pressure has really bothered us. We've got to make sure we get back in transition, and we've got to rebound. (They're a) talented basketball team."

…The benefit of having Jaykwon Walton back on the floor:
"He gives us an extra ball handler, another guy who can finish at the rim, another guy that creates shots for others on the floor. He did a great job (against Tulsa) of attacking the basket and turning down some jump shots. Anytime he can get going to the rim, it helps us a lot. He's another guy that can rebound as well."

…Why Memphis has been such matchup nightmare for recent Shocker teams:
"Just the way they defend. They press, they switch one-through-five, and they don't allow you to run plays. You've got to go make basketball plays. You've got to go in there and make things happen, and you've got to make good decisions… When they run and jump, and it's a 4-on-3 situation or a 3-on-2, we've got to take advantage of that."

…Keeping Memphis off the offensive glass:
"We've just got to do a good job of every time the ball is shot, finding somebody to hit and go and get a rebound."

…The importance of being good in transition:
"That's key to the basketball game. Any time we get a defensive rebound, we've got to be able to push. We've got to be able to take advantage of them pressing and trapping. And when we get an opportunity to go make an easy play, we've got to make it happen."

…Getting off to better starts:
"The last two games we played, both of those teams got easy looks to begin with. So our defense needs to be on point, because on the road it's hard to win when you get down big -- 14, 15 points -- especially against a team like Memphis."

…Walton's ripple effect on Porter and the rest of the lineup:
"He's another guy that's another point guard on the floor. He can make good basketball decisions. He's one of our better defenders. We usually match him up with the other team's best player, and that takes a lot of pressure off Craig Porter. Any time we've got him -- and Jaron Pierre -- playing well, that helps our basketball team a lot."

…Porter's impressive 2-point shooting percentage:
"We try to post him up a lot… He has great balance. He's really athletic, and he's just comfortable scoring with his back to the basket. Any time he can drive a smaller guard, he just has that athleticism where he can jump over those guys and finish around the rim."
