LAWRENCE, Kan. – Wichita State came up on the short end of a tightly contested first set and could not regain momentum as UNLV swept the Shockers 25-23, 25-15, 25-18 on Thursday afternoon at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.

The Shockers (3-3) trailed 19-15 late in the first set, but rallied to draw level at 23-23 on the strength of aces from
Natalie Foster and
Lily Liekweg combined with a pair of
Lauren McMahon kills. The Rebels (6-1) answered back with a kill of their own from Jordyn Freeman, and then a Wichita State attack error gave UNLV a 25-23 opening set win.

After the two teams traded two points apiece to open the second set, the Rebels unleashed a 12-0 run despite a pair of Wichita State timeouts in an effort to stop the bleeding. The Shockers pulled within 22-14 thanks to a
Brylee Kelly kill, but the Rebels claimed three of the next four points to nail down the set. Isabel Martin notched seven kills on 13 swings without an error in the set, as UNLV hit .419 in the stanza.

Another early run put Wichita State behind the eight-ball in set three, as UNLV turned a 3-3 tie into a 10-4 advantage on the strength of three Martin kills. The Shockers charged to within 14-10 after a Kelly kill forced a UNLV timeout, but the Rebels put the set out of reach by scoring five of the next six points.

Kelly and Foster each recorded eight kills to lead the Shocker attack, which finished the match hitting .185. UNLV got a match-high 21 terminations from Martin, helping the Rebels hit .305.
Morgan Weber led Wichita State with 13 digs.
MATCH TWO

Wichita State dropped the second game of the day to #19 Kansas by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-20 on Thursday night at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.

The Shockers (3-4) struggled to find a consistent rhythm offensively, committing 22 attack errors and hitting .094 for the match. The Jayhawks (7-0) used a stifling block that racked up 14 rejections in three sets.

Kansas slowly pulled away in the opening set, gradually building a 15-9 lead into the first media timeout. Wichita State briefly sliced the deficit to four at 15-11, but would get no closer down the stretch as the Jayhawks hung on for a 25-18 win. True freshman
Emerson Wilford recorded her first two collegiate kills in the set.

The Shockers were within 11-10 midway through the second set and 20-15 later in the frame, but the Jayhawks struck for the final five points to put it away. Kansas did not commit a single attack error in the set, hitting .483 and getting five kills from Ayah Elnady.

Wichita State held their largest lead of the match early in the third set, grabbing a 10-6 advantage with the help of kills from
Natalie Foster,
Lauren McMahon and
Morgan Weber. The set turned when Kansas responded with a 6-0 run to take a 12-10 lead, and the Shockers would never again reach level footing. WSU's last gasp came when a McMahon kill made it 19-18 and forced a Kansas timeout, but the Jayhawks scored three straight out of the break and finished off the Shockers, 25-20.
Foster led the Shockers with nine kills, while
Lara Uyar reached double-figures with 11 digs.

Wichita State will be back in action on Saturday morning at 11:00 am against Northern Illinois to open the KC Roos Classic.
