Shoved and bumped by teammates and coach. Wichita State outside hitter
Morgan Weber loved the contact.
Â
"When the energy is up, it's great," she said.
Â
Weber produced and absorbed a lot of the energy during Sunday's 3-0 (30-28, 25-15, 25-22) win over ECU at Koch Arena. She matched her career high with 14 kills while hitting .619. She added nine digs to help the Shockers (7-6, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) cool off ECU's Angeles Alderete in the second and third sets.
Â
Coach
Chris Lamb noticed and rewarded Weber with a chest bump after her tip scored in the third set. Weber's run of four straight points late in that set inspired her teammates to playfully push her around to highlight the scoring that put the Shockers up 22-17.
Â
"Weber and I have been there before," Lamb said. "Every now and then, it's got to happen."
Â
Weber's all-around performance highlighted a weekend in which the Shockers swept both opponents – Temple and ECU – with efficient offensive performances. Wichita State hit .307 against Temple and .310 against ECU (5-9, 0-2).
Â
On Sunday,
Natalie Foster continued her efficient weekend by hitting .348 with 10 kills. She scorched Temple for eight kills on 10 swings with one error on Friday.
Â
"Our energy was more up this weekend," Foster said. "We were doing our jobs and that left a lot of openings. When people are pulling blocks, it's a fun game to play."
Â
Foster's work in the middle and
Sophia Rohling and
Brylee Kelly on the pins attracted a lot of attention. That gave Weber one-on-one matchups and she scored with a variety of shots.
Â
Â
"The middles are holding blocks, the right-side is holding blocks," Weber said. "It creates that opening for me to get a kill or take a good swing at it."
Â
Foster, Rohling and Kelly score consistently for the Shockers. Lamb is searching for more weapons to emerge to counter defenses that focus on that trio. On Sunday, Weber did just that.
Â
"She found something that worked and stayed with it," Lamb said. "Blocking is about timing, so she's disrupting timing better than ever. It was a career night for Morgan, and a night when maybe we needed it, because it was a dogfight."
