Shockers' Fall Season Underway

9/14/2022 1:38:00 PM

WICHITA – Head men's tennis coach Darragh Glavin announced the Shockers' roster and fall schedule, which includes four tournaments in four different states, and the team competed unattached at home to kick off the fall tournament schedule.

Wichita State returns five players from last year's roster, including ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year, Kristof Minarik, who joined the Shockers last January, started the spring season 8-0 in singles and quickly climbed to the top line. The Shockers will also see the return of Orel Ovil, Zach Grueber, Jaydn Richardson and Alex Richards. Richards paired up with Minarik for 15 doubles matches in the spring, and the duo made an appearance in the ITA doubles rankings, coming in at No. 49 on Feb. 23.

The Shockers welcome UTSA transfer Misha Kvantaliani and freshmen Luke Bracks and Richey King. Last season as a junior, Kvantaliani tied for the best singles record for the Roadrunners at 10-10, playing every match at No. 1. He was named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Singles Player of the Week and was part of the WAC Doubles Team of the Week on March 16. Bracks and King were the No. 1 high school players in Oklahoma and Kansas, respectively.

All eight Shockers played unattached in the 5K ITA Tour: Fall Circuit presented by Great Harvest Bread and hosted by Wichita State on Sept. 9 and 10. Ovil and Kvantaliani made the semifinals in singles, and the duo of Minarik and Richards made a semifinal appearance in doubles.

The three newcomers will make their official Shocker debuts Sept. 16-18 as the squad splits up to get the official fall season underway at the Drake Invite in Des Moines, Iowa and the Hilltop Fall Invitational in Dallas, Texas.

Grueber, Kvantaliani, Ovil and Richardson will open up at Drake, while Bracks, King, Minarik and Richards will travel to SMU.

The fall schedule continues at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., the host site of last spring's American Athletic Conference Championships, and concludes in Fayetteville, Ark. at the ITA Central Region Championships.
