2022 Baseball Season in Review

7/22/2022 3:40:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State baseball team ended the 2022 season with a record of 21-36, going 9-15 in American Athletic Conference play for a sixth-place finish in head coach Eric Wedge's third season at the helm. The campaign was highlighted by a Frisco Classic championship, a walk-off blast against in-state foe Kansas, a rout of eventual College World Series participant Oklahoma, and three individual players on the AAC First Team All-Conference.

The Shockers got off to a slow start out of the gate, battling brutal weather and a difficult opening slate to an 0-6 record. Three of the first seven games had a first pitch time altered by weather, and a scheduled game against Texas State at Globe Life Field in Arlington had to be moved to San Marcos, Texas due to a winter storm. Wichita State bounced back from the challenging first week to go 2-1 at the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, rallying from a four-run deficit to down Iowa 8-7 in the final game.

WSU carried that momentum into Riders Field for the illustrious Frisco Classic, battling three Power Five programs. It was déjà vu all over again in the tournament opener, as Wichita State surged back from a 4-0 deficit against Iowa for the second time in less than a week. Payton Tolle had a game-tying, three-run double, and Sawyre Thornhill gave the Shockers the lead with an eighth inning RBI single in a 6-4 win. Tolle moved to the mound for the second game against Washington State and delivered a gem, flipping seven innings of one-run ball to earn the win in a comfortable 8-2 WSU victory. The win set up a showdown with Texas A&M for the title, and once again the Shockers found themselves in a quick 4-0 hole. WSU found success against the Texas A&M bullpen, however, and Tolle provided the big swing with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh. After the Aggies tied the game in the eighth, Jack Sigrist drove home the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly, as the Shockers claimed the Frisco Classic championship with a 6-5 win.

Wichita State opened the home portion of the schedule with a 6-4 victory over NCAA tournament participant Oral Roberts, then claimed a series win against South Dakota State to reach the .500 mark. After a series loss to New Mexico, Garrett Kocis provided one of the highlights of the campaign with an extra-inning, walk-off home run to secure a 7-5 win over Kansas on March 23. Starter Cameron Bye pitched Wichita State to a victory in the series finale against Creighton, capping off an incredible stretch of 24.2 innings without allowing an earned run to open the season.

Jace Kaminska authored the best start of his career in the AAC opener at Houston on April 1, striking out 12 over eight scoreless innings in a 4-0 win. Bye matched Kaminska the following weekend, firing eight scoreless at East Carolina in a shutout victory over the eventual American champions.

That win preceded an 11-game losing skid, a run that included heartbreaking late-inning defeats at the hands of Oklahoma State, Cincinnati and Memphis. After dropping the series opener against the Tigers, Wichita State put together one of their best stretches of the season, claiming the series by winning the next two games and then sweeping Tulane to wrap up conference play. In the home finale against Oklahoma, the Shockers bludgeoned the Sooners 18-0, coming within four outs of a no-hitter while launching a season-high five home runs.

Due to some inclement weather in Florida, WSU left-hander Caden Favors started three consecutive games as an opener, stringing together 16.1 consecutive scoreless innings from April 29 through May 24. He got the ball in the AAC Tournament opener against Houston, a wild back-and-forth affair in which the Shockers erased another four-run deficit before falling 10-7. A 12-4 loss to UCF the following day ended Wichita State's season.

Brock Rodden, Cameron Bye and Chuck Ingram were all named to the AAC First Team All-Conference, with Rodden tabbed as Newcomer Position Player of the Year. The talented switch-hitting second baseman was then selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th Round of the 2022 MLB Draft, while Shockers closer Connor Holden was snapped up by the Detroit Tigers as an undrafted free agent.

The Shockers excelled in the classroom, earning a 3.5056 cumulative GPA and placing 32 players on the AAC All-Academic Team.
