Offensive Struggles Haunt Shockers in Loss at USF

TAMPA, Fla. – South Florida clinched the series with a 5-3 win vs. Wichita State Saturday afternoon at USF Softball Stadium.

Wichita State (20-13, 3-2) has lost three straight games and drops its first conference series of the season.

Zoe Jones went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and Lainee Brown also had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Wichita State had plenty of scoring opportunities, but they left 10 on base and was just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. The Shockers left the bases loaded on two occasions.

Caitlin Bingham (8-3) surrendered the loss behind five runs on nine hits. The lack of offense behind her wasted a season-high seven strikeouts.

After two scoreless innings, both teams scored in the third. Jones dropped an RBI single into right to put the Shockers on the board first, but USF responded with three runs in the bottom half on an RBI single and two-run home run.

Jones opened the top of the fifth with her eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to deep left-center. Four batters later, Lainee Brown tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to right.

The Bulls used a go-ahead two-run double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth break a 3-3 tie.
