HOUSTON – Wichita State carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but Houston scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to walk off the Shockers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Schroeder Park.
With one out and nobody aboard in the eighth, Samuel Benjamin reached on an error. Pinch-hitter Samuel Tormos then worked a walk, putting men at first and second.
Connor Holden came out of the WSU bullpen and allowed an RBI single to Brandon Uhse, trimming the Wichita State lead to 3-2. After a strikeout, Cameron Nickens bounced a ground ball to third that
Xavier Casserilla gloved on a dive, but his throw to first base sailed high allowing the tying run to score.
Wichita State (12-15) went down in order in the top of the ninth, and Houston plated the winner when Ian McMillan hit a sinking liner that eluded
Couper Cornblum in right field, allowing Malachi Lott to score from first base with the winning run.
The result was a tough-luck no-decision for Wichita State starter
Cameron Bye, who struck out a career-high eight over 7.1 strong innings, allowing just one earned run. It was the first earned run of the season against Bye, whose season ERA now stands at 0.50.
The Shockers struck first on a solo home run off the bat of
Seth Stroh in the top of the third, then after Uhse tied the game with a solo shot of his own in the fourth, retook the lead courtesy of a solo homer from
Garrett Kocis in the top of the fifth.
In the sixth,
Ross Cadena made it 3-1 when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Ben Sears (4-0) picked up the win for Houston, while Holden (2-1) was saddled with the loss.
The Shockers return home for a midweek matchup against Oklahoma State on Tuesday night. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
