Shockers Stun Texas A&M to Win Frisco Classic

FRISCO, Texas – Wichita State erased a 4-0 deficit for the third time in the past week, scoring six times over the final three innings to knock off Texas A&M 6-5 and win the Frisco Classic.

The Shockers are the first team from The American to win the tournament, defeating opponents from the Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC en route to the title.

Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Shockers (5-7) began to rally against the Texas A&M bullpen. Chuck Ingram drew a leadoff walk, then Payton Tolle singled him around to third. After a strikeout, Couper Cornblum lashed an RBI double into right-center to pull WSU within 4-1. Ross Cadena followed with a hard smash that ricocheted off the glove of Texas A&M first baseman Jack Moss, allowing Cadena to reach first base safely and scoring Tolle from third. The Aggies (7-4) turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning with the lead at 4-2.

Wichita State took their first lead in the bottom of the seventh. After two groundouts started the inning, Xavier Casserilla coaxed a two-out walk. Ingram yanked the next pitch into the left field corner, scoring Casserilla all the way from first and cutting the deficit to 4-3. Payton Tolle then slammed the first pitch he saw over the wall in right for a go-ahead, two-run home run and a 5-4 Wichita State lead.

The advantage did not last long, however, as Texas A&M responded quickly in the top of the eighth. Ryan Targac drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a pinch-hit RBI single off the bat of Dylan Rock that tied the game at 5-5. Cadena cut down Rock attempting to steal second to end the frame, sending the game to the bottom of the eighth deadlocked.

The Aggies brought on closer Robert Hogan (0-1), who promptly hit Cornblum and then threw two wild pitches to move him around to third with nobody out. A groundout to shortstop produced the first out of the inning, but Jack Sigrist followed by lining a ball into right that was caught by a diving Brett Minnich. The dive allowed Cornblum to race home easily with the go-ahead run.

Connor Holden (1-0) worked a clean top of the ninth inning, inducing a pair of fly outs and a grounder to Casserilla at third to end it.

Tolle was named Frisco Classic MVP, as well as an All-Tournament selection at both DH and Starting Pitcher. Thornhill snagged a spot on the All-Tournament team, as well, recording at least one hit in all three games to extend his season-opening hitting streak to 12 games.

Adam Ketelsen got the start for Wichita State and took a no-decision, allowing three runs on three hits over three innings. Foster Gifford allowed one run in two frames, and Caden Favors surrendered the lone run in the eighth before handing the ball off to Holden.

The Shockers return to Eck Stadium for their home opener on Tuesday against Oral Roberts. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
