TULSA, Okla. – Oral Roberts scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 5-3 deficit, knocking off Wichita State 11-6 on Tuesday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Â
Wichita State (2-7) had surged in front in the top of the fifth inning when
Sawyre Thornhill crushed a two-out grand slam to left-center, giving the Shockers their first lead of the game at 5-3. But the Golden Eagles (6-2) stormed back in the sixth, as the first nine batters to come to the plate all reached base. Jackson Loftin homered on the first pitch of the inning to make it 5-4, and four batters later Holden Breeze lined a two-run double to left to give Oral Roberts the lead back at 6-5. Alec Jones plated two more with a single of his own, and Justin Quinn capped the frame with a three-run homer to right for an 11-5 lead.
Payton Tolle picked up his first collegiate RBI with a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh that trimmed the deficit to 11-6, but ORU relievers retired the final eight Shockers to nail down the victory.
The game featured 13 combined pitchers, seven from Wichita State and six from Oral Roberts.
Golden Eagles starter Andrew Roach retired the first nine men he faced with five strikeouts, giving time for ORU to seize a 2-0 lead courtesy of a second-inning homer off the bat of Joshua Cox. The Shockers answered with a long ball of their own in the top of the fourth, as Rodden touched up Roach with a solo shot to right center.
After ORU pushed the lead back to three with an RBI single from Cox in the fourth, the Shockers finally broke through against the Golden Eagles bullpen.
Andrew Stewart walked,
Ross Cadena singled, and
Xavier Casserilla was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Thornhill, who sliced the first pitch he saw from Brooks Fowler over the wall in left-center for Wichita State's first grand slam of the season and a 5-3 lead.
Shockers starter
Matt Boyer ended up with a no-decision, allowing three runs over 3.1 innings.
Caden Favors got the final two outs of the fourth and worked a clean fifth before running into trouble in the sixth.
Grayson Jones (0-1),
Jace Miner, and
Ryan Stuempfig were each tagged for multiple runs in the inning.
Jacob Widener (1-0) picked up the victory for ORU with a shutout top of the sixth.
Nate Adler and
Spencer Hynes each tossed an inning of scoreless relief for WSU, while Casserilla and Tolle recorded their first career multi-hit games.
The Shockers return to action on Friday afternoon at the Frisco Classic against Iowa. First pitch from Riders Field is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
