WICHITA – Destiny Masters and
Hudson Bailey kicked off the indoor track and field season with multi-event competition wins Friday at the Shocker Multi.
Masters got out to a hot start with a personal-best performance in the 60-meter hurdles, running 8.53 to move up to No. 6 on the Wichita State all-time list and earn 1,010 points in the event to take a lead she never lost. Moving on to the high jump, Masters entered the competition after the rest of the field had already completed their efforts, clearing her opening bar of 1.67m/5'7.5" before passing to her final height of 1.73m/5'8", three inches below her personal record.
She went on to record the best long jump of the day (5.65m/18'6.5") after throwing the second-farthest shot put (10.52m/34'6.25") and finished with a 2:38.85 in the 800 meters, less than two seconds off her career best to secure to the Shocker Multi pentathlon win.
Redshirt freshman
Abby Klipstein finished third in the pentathlon in her collegiate debut, finishing top four in four events, including a third-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles (9.12).
Kenisa Meyer and
Anna Heacock placed fifth (3159 pts; PB) and seventh (3050 pts), respectively. Heacock finished second in the hurdles , while Kenisa finished top-three in two events, recording personal bests in four events while tying her best in the high jump.
Three Shocker newcomers competed unattached with
Tess Roman finishing second with 3292 points,
Sadie Millard fourth with 3183 points and
Lillian Morrison ninth with 2598 points.
Jalen Milligan launched the farthest shot put of the day and was in fourth place after four events but did not complete the 800 meters and dropped to 10
th.
In the heptathlon, Bailey took the lead after the second event on day one and held on to it through the next five events to earn his first collegiate heptathlon victory with a personal-best 4,945 points and new personal bests in three events.
Kolby Caster and
Wyatt Leutzinger also recorded heptathlon personal bests to place second and third, respectively. Caster logged four personal bests as Leutzinger made his Shocker debut and tied for the highest pole vault clearance of the day (4.55m/14'11").
Freshman
Luke Porter competed in a Shocker uniform for the first time as well, placing fifth overall and winning the 1,000 meters to wrap up the two-day event.
JD Prinsloo entered the heptathlon for the purpose of scoring points for his intrasquad team and finished seventh after winning the 60 meters on day one and finishing second in the 1,000 meters.
