Shocker Way Fund Includes Alston Educational Award

12/16/2022 10:27:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. – A new fundraising campaign named the Shocker Way Fund has been established for Wichita State Athletics to engage and serve individuals within the community by aligning their philanthropic interests with strategic student-athlete development initiatives within the athletic department.

One of those initiatives is through the Alston Educational Award. The purpose of the award is to support student-athletes through education-related financial aid based on their academic achievement and retention at Wichita State University. Select sports will be eligible for the award during the 2022-23 school year.

In order to be eligible for the Alston Educational Award, student-athletes will need to meet certain academic criteria including good academic standing and grade-point average along with a retention policy.

"'The Shocker Way Fund' will assist with currently unbudgeted student-athlete support needs such as Alston Educational Awards, enhanced licensed performance/mental health clinician dedicated to athletics, comprehensive facility master planning project, leadership development initiatives and student-athlete scholarships," Director of Athletics Kevin Saal said.

Through annual, facility, and endowment gifts, donors are creating opportunities in the classroom, in competition and in the community for 250 WSU student-athletes across 15 varsity sports.

Wichita State Athletics is committed to academic and athletic excellence. Gifts to the Shocker Way Fund provide unrestricted support to Wichita State Athletic teams and support programs. Shocker Way donors play a vital role in helping WSU student-athletes achieve success in the classroom, in their sport and in service to their communities. Each contribution helps ensure they have the opportunity to reach their full academic and athletic potential and maintain the proud Shocker Way tradition.

Along with the tax-deductible benefit, supporters will receive four (4) Shocker Priority Points for every $100 donated to this fund. Contributions may not be transferred to or from other funds.
