Stillwater, Okla. – Wichita State's men's tennis team opens their fall campaign this weekend at the OSU Invitational.
Â
Eight Shockers will be matched up against players from Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Tulsa for the three-day tournament.
Â
For the first competition of the season, head coach
Danny Bryan would like to see his athletes demonstrate what they've been focusing on in practice.
Â
"We've been working a lot on things from a mental standpoint: controlling our emotions, having routines in between points and thinking about game plan," Bryan said. "If they can go out there and compete, and it's obvious to me that they're trying to do the things that we've been working on, then that would be an extremely successful tournament."
Â
Six returners will make the trip to Stillwater, Okla., including
Stefan Latinovic, who played at No. 1-3 singles last season and went 12-8 in doubles play.
Â
"Stefan's played a lot of matches and had some great results," Bryan said. "I feel like mentally he's in a really good place. He's been working hard, so I'm excited to see him keep building."
Â
Joining the returners this weekend will be freshman
Jackie Lin and transfer
Jaydn Richardson.
Â
"I'm excited to see Jackie in his first tournament," Bryan said. "In practice, he's been making some big strides, but he hasn't played a lot of matches, so I'm just excited to see him compete. Jaydn has also been working really hard, and I'm looking forward to seeing him compete as well."
Â
Among the competition this weekend will be Tulsa's Kody Pearson, who is ranked 37
th in the ITA Division I preseason singles rankings and ranked 14
th alongside partner Connor Di Marco in the doubles rankings.
Â
The Shockers get underway with doubles play Friday at 4 p.m. against Oklahoma State., followed by singles matches against Tulsa at 6 p.m. On both Saturday and Sunday, Wichita State will play doubles at 10 a.m. and singles at 12 p.m.
