WICHITA, Kan. - Senior
Murkel Dellien caps off his wildly successful regular season by being named the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year. He shares the honor with UCF junior Gabriel Decamps.
Â
The men's all-conference team includes those players ranked in the top 125 in singles and tandems ranked in the top 60 in doubles in the Oracle/ITA rankings. The Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year honors are voted by the head coaches.
Â
No. 39 Dellien went 6-0 in play against conference opponents, with all but two matches being at the No. 1 spot. He is currently riding a 12-match win streak in singles, with a perfect 5-0 record against ranked opponents. His highlight matches of the year include victories over the AAC's top singles players: current No. 34 Hamish Stewart of Tulane, No. 58 James Story of Memphis, and co-player of the year and No. 9 Gabriel Decamps of UCF.
Â
Dellien will have the chance to improve on his individual success when he competes at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Tournament from May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Â
This is the Shockers first AAC Player of the Year and the first such honor since Tin Ostojic won MVC Player of the Year in the 2015-16 season.
Â
Dellien was also named on the all-conference singles team and the All-American duo of
Marius Frosa and
Murkel Dellien were included on the all-conference doubles team. The duo of No. 40 Dellien/Frosa went 9-5 on the season with their highlight being a win over current No. 5 Trey Hildebrand and Bogdan Pavel of UCF. The pair was recently named as the eighth alternates for the NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Tournament.
Â
This is the Shockers first inclusion on the AAC all-conference singles team. This is the second time the program has been represented in the AAC all-conference doubles team, with Dellien/Frosa making the list in 2018-19.
Â
The Shockers continue their season in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships by facing Arizona State on May 8th at 9:00 a.m., at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
