COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Wichita State track and field team had three representatives on the women's first day of competition at the NCAA West Regional on Thursday at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
 
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said he was proud of all three athletes who competed for the Shockers.
 
"This is a really tough meet and our athletes today were on this stage for the first time," Rainbolt said. "I was proud of each of them. It's a tough competition to qualify for and I thought they represented us extremely well."
 
Kourtni Hubert kicked off the day in the women's javelin. She finished in 40th place with a toss of 43.02m/141-2. Hubert will not advance to the NCAA Championships.
 
Hubert finished her first season in a Shocker uniform after waiting three years to throw the javelin. She redshirted her first year, battled injuries her second year and her third outdoor season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Jacque Darby competed in the women's long jump after making the field of competitors due to a medical scratch in the original field of 48. Darby beat out her 48th seed coming into the meet. She jumped 5.91m/19-4.75 to finish nine spots above her projection in 39th.
 
Yazmine Wright battled in her heat of the 1,500 meters, but was unable to move on to the quarterfinals. Wright crossed the line with a time of 4:32.08. Her time slotted her at No. 39 when all the results were complied.
 
The Shocker women will return to action with representation in the high jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday.
 
Wichita State's men continue action at the West Regional on Friday. Shockers are set to compete in the 1,500 meters, 110-meter hurdles, 3,000-meter steeplechase, triple jump and high jump.
