Murkel Dellien is the first Shocker tennis player to be named the ITA UTR Player of the Week after he increased his Universal Tennis Ranking to 13.15 this past week while also guiding the team to two top 50 wins.
Â
Dellien, a native of Trinidad, Bolivia, went a combined 3-0 last weekend to help the Shockers beat #48 SMU and upset #28 Pepperdine at home to extend their win streak to five. Dellien started the weekend with a doubles victory with partner
Marius Frosa over SMU's Caleb Chakravarthi/Jan-Simon Vrbsky, 6-3. In singles, Dellien handled Chakravarthi, 6-3, 6-2, to put the Shockers up 3-0. Dellien's signature win of the weekend came against the No. 28 Waves. He faced No. 52 Adrian Oetzbach on the premiere court and won a three-set thriller for the clinch and his ninth- straight win, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
Â
The team returns to action this weekend when they face some stiff competition on the road. The Shockers face No. 24/28 Tulane on April 9, No. 39/37 USF on April 11, and No. 9/10 UCF on April 12.
