Shockers Drop Doubleheader at Cincinnati Friday

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Wichita State University baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Cincinnati Friday, April 23, at UC Baseball Stadium, falling in game one, 6-0, before faltering in the nightcap, 12-2 in seven innings.

Wichita State (19-14, 7-6 American) and Cincinnati (18-17, 7-7 American) are scheduled to play game three of the four-game American Athletic Conference series at 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET) Saturday, April 24.

Cincinnati left-handed pitcher Garrett Schoenle stifled the Shockers in the 6-0 setback in game one, tossing eight scoreless innings and allowing only four hits – all singles – while collecting nine strikeouts with only two walks on 121 pitches to improve to 4-1 on the season.

It marked the first time WSU was shut out during the 2021 season.

Ross Cadena, David VanVooren, Corrigan Bartlett and Couper Cornblum each collected singles, pacing the Shockers at the plate in the opener.

Wichita State right-hander Preston Snavely (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up four runs – one earned – on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 5 2/3 innings.

Ryan Nicholson homered and drove in a game-high four runs, while Cole Harting posted two hits, including a triple, leading the Bearcats at the plate.

In game two, the Bearcats used a four-run second inning and three-run fourth inning to pull away from the Shockers, before plating three in the seventh to invoke the American Athletic Conference's seven-inning-run-rule, sealing the 12-2 win.

Jack Sigrist went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Paxton Wallace and Cornblum both doubled and drove in runs, leading WSU in the second game.

Shocker right-hander Liam Eddy (3-6) took the setback on the rubber after surrendering eight runs – seven earned – on 11 hits with five Ks and a walk in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Joey Bellini had two hits, including a homer, and batted-in four runs, and Jace Mercer added a homer and three RBI, pacing the Bearcats in game two.

Cincinnati starter Zach Segal (3-3) picked up the victory on the mound after tossing a seven-inning, complete-game, allowing two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.
