WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams wrapped up the multi-event portion of the KT Woodman Classic inside of Cessna Stadium on Thursday.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field
Steve Rainbolt said he was pleased with what he saw from
Maria Romero and
Anna Heacock.
"
Maria Romero had a lifetime best in the heptathlon, and I know there's a lot more there," Rainbolt said. "I'm confident she will score much higher than that.
"
Anna Heacock is a good athlete. She was the Junior Olympic heptathlon champion a couple years ago. She had an injury and then COVID hit, so it's been three years since she's done a heptathlon. With that considered, I think she did a good job. I was proud of her."
Romero finished second with a personal-best 4,603 points and Heacock place fourth with 4,396 points in her outdoor collegiate multi-event debut.
Romero and Heacock kicked off the second day of action in the long jump. Romero took second in the heptathlon long jump with a mark of 5.24m/17-2.25. Heacock also earned a top-10 finish, tying for sixth with a jump of 5.03m/16-6.
Heacock threw the javelin 31.47m/103-3 for third place in the heptathlon javelin. Romero took sixth in the heptathlon javelin with a toss of 28.24m/92-8.
Romero and Heacock capped off the day with the 800 meters. Romero won the event with a time of 2:29.20 and Heacock took 10th with a time of 2:39.13.
"(With this meet), we figure out where we're at," Rainbolt said. "We can figure out what needs to get worked on in preparation for the conference championship. This will benefit us four weeks from now."
The Shockers return to action with the track and field portion of the KT Woodman Classic on at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Cessna Stadium.
