Shockers Win Seventh Straight after Two Wins Saturday

ARLINGON, Texas – Wichita State continued its hot streak with two more wins at the Boerner Invitational Saturday, defeating North Texas in six innings, 13-2, and UT Arlington in the nightcap, 6-3.

Wichita State (9-2) has tied its second-best start in program history through 11 games. The 1993 and 2017 squads both started 9-2, while the 1994 team won 10 of its first 11 to begin the season.

Five Shockers had at least two hits vs. North Texas, led by Bailee Nickerson who went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Addison Barnard was 2-for-4, including her team-leading sixth home run of the season and two RBI. Ryleigh Buck scored three runs, while going 2-for-3 with a triple.

Bailey Lange improved to 4-0 on the season. She allowed just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out four in 6.0 innings.

A wild first inning saw Wichita State plate five runs behind two North Texas errors, a catcher's interference and four singles. Nickerson and Kaylee Huecker recorded RBI singles and Lauren Mills chipped in with an RBI groundout.

The Shockers tacked on another run in the third following a triple from Ryleigh Buck and an RBI groundout from Nickerson. Four straight singles from Mills, Huecker, Bailey Urban and McKinney then made it 8-0 after three innings of play.

North Texas broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Maia Wark.

After two scoreless innings at the dish for Wichita State, a home run party broke out in the top of the sixth. McKinney started the inning with a single, bringing up Barnard with an RBI opportunity and she came through with a two-run blast. The very next batter, Perrigan, delivered a solo shot for back-to-back jacks. It marked the third time this season Barnard and Perrigan have homered in back-to-back plate appearances.

Buck then singled to bring Nickerson to the plate, who promptly left the yard to make it 13-1.

The Mean Green added a run in the bottom half, but that would do it.

In the nightcap, Wylie Glover provided the punch, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Perrigan drove in two runs on a double and Neleigh Herring was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Erin McDonald (4-1) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits to go with three strikeouts. Caitlin Bingham recorded her first career save in 1.2 innings of relief work. She gave up only one hit and struck out two.

Wichita State broke into the scoring column in the top of the third with a four-run inning. Perrigan started with a two-run double and then scored on Herring's single up the middle. Four batters later, Buck crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

In the top of the fifth Glover hit her fourth career home run with a laser to right, putting the Shockers up 6-0. UTA got a run back in the bottom half courtesy of a leadoff solo home run.

The Mavs made it a three-run game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run. Bingham came in to finish the inning, retiring the final two batters.

Wichita State concludes the Boerner Invitational tomorrow vs. No. 23 Iowa State at 11:30 a.m.
